The Rule Of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is a design based  rule that is optional when composing an image whether it be a photograph, painting or design work.
The rule is that points of interest within the image, for instance a subject like the boat above, should be positioned on the intersections when the frame is divided into thirds. If the subject is positioned at these points,  the image may have more tension, energy or interest in the composition.

In the above video it is shown that the horizon is aligned with the first horizontal line from the top. The boats path follows the second horizontal line from the top. This moving image also starts with the boat at the intersecting point of a horizontal and vertical third line.

This technique has been noted since 1797 by John Thomas Smith and is commonly used today in media and art.
Here is my further example of where the rule has been applied to effect in this wildlife photograph.
